With the attack on Sevastopol, the Ukrainian forces have dealt a serious blow to the Russian aggressor. This success is said to have been made possible by a crowdfunding campaign: a satellite funded by donations played a “very important role” in the maneuver, according to the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Service (HUR).
Several warships were hit during the attack on Sevastopol in Russian-occupied Crimea. British intelligence said a Russian landing craft was “functionally destroyed” and a submarine suffered “catastrophic damage.”
A key tool for this attack: a satellite acquired through a Ukrainian crowdfunding campaign. Ukraine is said to have received this exactly one year ago – on September 20, 2022. According to the secret service HUR, this makes it possible to obtain information crucial for combat operations on a daily basis. He thanked everyone who participated in the campaign.
Ukraine previously did not have its own satellite
According to the Kiev Independent, the satellite was already in space and the Finnish company ICEYE eventually handed it over to the Ukrainian government. In addition, ICEYE would provide access to images from other satellites and allow Ukraine to “receive radar satellite images of critical locations.” Until then, Ukraine did not have its own satellite in orbit and therefore relied “on satellite images from its allies in the first six months of the Russian invasion,” the online medium said.
Shortly after the start of the war, the Finnish company took a stand and condemned the “unprovoked aggressive military action against Ukraine.” ICEYE also made clear that it would not share images or data with Russia or other sanctioned states.
