US President Joe Biden has launched an initiative to train young people in climate protection. The Climate Corps program aims to train 20,000 young people within a year in the areas of clean energy, environmental protection and climate resilience. In concrete terms, this concerns paid internships, which are also intended to create employment for the participants.
The different possible applications in cities and communities should be published on a website. The Climate Corps program was previously proposed as part of the broader Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) passed last year, but was scrapped due to strong Republican opposition and cost concerns.
Biden now used his executive authority to launch the initiative. Democrats and environmental groups had called on Biden to implement the plans. Biden wants to run for a second term in next year’s presidential elections. The 80-year-old is also dependent on the support of young voters.
