In Italy there will no longer be entrance tests for medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine. A corresponding bill was passed on Wednesday. The government also wants to make it easier to employ doctors from abroad.
A decree adopted during the 2020 corona pandemic is extended. Both measures are intended to combat the shortage of doctors. Since 2005, one in ten retired physicians has not been replaced.
More young doctors need to be trained now. In the 2023/24 academic year, 19,544 places were allocated, which is already 23 percent more than in the comparable period 2022/23. The next step is to lift admission restrictions for medical schools. “We will give our young people the opportunity to freely enroll in the faculties of medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine,” said MP Roberto Marti.
Doctors’ union: “Unreasonable arrangement”
So far in Italy, the Matura grade accounts for 20 percent of applications, while the remaining 80 percent is an entrance test. Criticism of the plan comes from doctors’ union Fnomceo. “We are clearly against it. This is absolutely not a sensible arrangement.” In ten years, many graduates would no longer have a chance of a job as a doctor, according to Fnomceo chairman Filippo Anelli.
