Six people have been killed in riots in Congo. Protesters stormed the UN mission building on Monday, to which security forces responded with tear gas and fired shots.
According to eyewitnesses, the protesters forcibly entered the building in the city of Goma, destroying or stealing furniture. The security forces then used tear gas and firearms, killing six as a result of the riot. The attackers were criminals who had used the protest against the presence of UN peacekeepers in Congo for their own purposes, police in North Kivu province said.
Prior to the incident, civil society organizations and President Félix Tshisekedi’s party called for the demonstration after Congolese Senate President Modeste Bahati asked UN mission Monusco to leave Congo. Bahati’s statement was made in mid-July.
