Parliament agreed – Road traffic offenders: EU-wide prosecution becomes more concrete

Date:

In the future, EU countries should cooperate much more intensively with each other in prosecuting traffic offenders. This project cleared a new hurdle in the EU Parliament on Wednesday.

The majority voted in favor of this. Negotiators from Parliament and EU countries had previously agreed to strengthen administrative assistance procedures between the countries. Currently, approximately 40 percent of cross-border traffic violations remain unpunished.

Whether it is a speeding offender, a parking violator or a wrong-way driver: if a citizen commits a traffic violation in another EU country, the authorities in his home country can collect fines under the new rules. This also applies if another state has imposed the penalty. Private companies should be prohibited from collecting fines from foreigners.

The list of violations
In addition to speeding or drink-driving, the list of offenses triggering cross-border procedures will now also include dangerous parking and dangerous overtaking, as well as hit-and-run and ignoring restricted lines.

Now the EU countries must agree again. But that is considered a formality. A transition period of 30 months is planned for implementation into national law.
