Streamer in sight – Insidious new phishing trick: how to protect yourself

Date:

Cybercriminals in Austria are using a new scam to empty their victims’ credit card accounts. In emails that are deceptively genuine, they disguise themselves as popular streaming services such as Netflix or Spotify – and ask victims to re-enter their payment details. If you comply with the request, an Apple Pay account will be secretly created for you, and money will be transferred without further verification.

Payment providers have actually armed themselves against such fraud with so-called two-factor authentication. However, in the specific case, these security codes sent by email or SMS are of no use: in their two-stage scam, the attackers not only extract the payment details from their victims, but also steal the security codes they received from them . The modus operandi in detail.
