Bizarre spectacle: storm turns place into stinking ‘bubble bath’

Date:

Storm ‘Babet’ effectively turned the small Scottish coastal town of Johnshaven into a gigantic ‘hot tub’ on Friday. It blew masses of water, stinking so-called sea foam, onto the land, where it covered streets and houses in the village (see video).

The sea foam in the North Sea stirred up by ‘Babet’ literally ‘snowed’ the streets and houses. Tracy Blease, who was driving in her home town of Johnshaven in Aberdeenshire at around 5.30pm on Friday evening, filmed the bizarre natural spectacle (see video above).

Storms claimed two lives
So far two people have died in the severe storms in Scotland. A 56-year-old man driving his van near the town of Forfar was killed by a tree, and a 57-year-old woman was swept away by floodwaters in the Highlands and killed. Storm Babet had previously caused flooding in Ireland.

Funerals suspended until Monday
In the town of Brechin, near the east coast and surrounding towns, authorities evacuated hundreds of homes. Many streets were flooded. Funerals have been suspended in the Aberdeenshire area until Monday. Several main roads and rail connections were closed. Schools in the worst-hit region of Angus remained closed.

Thousands of households temporarily without power
The Scottish Environment Agency has warned of “unprecedented” rises in river levels. There was a temporary power outage in thousands of households. The British weather authority Met Office has issued another red severe weather warning for the county of Angus for this Saturday.

Several railway lines are closed
In the border area of England and Wales around the cities of Chester and Shrewsbury and near Sheffield in Northern England, several railway lines had to be closed due to flooding.
