Explosions heard – US base in Iraq attacked with missiles

Date:

Amid US plans to expand its military presence in the Middle East, a missile attack is said to have taken place on a US base in Anbar province in western Iraq. This was announced on Sunday from American military circles.

The base in Ain al-Asad was targeted by Katyusha rockets on Sunday, two military officials in Iraq said. An explosion was heard in the base. The base in the western Iraqi province of Anbar is home to US soldiers as well as other international forces.

Increased attacks on military bases
On Saturday, the base’s defense systems shot down two drones circling over the area around Ain al-Asad. Recently, there have been several attacks on military bases in Iraq where US troops are stationed.

The US Department of Defense said the US responded to the latest attacks with the planned increase in the Middle East. A THAAD missile defense system and additional Patriot air defense systems would be deployed to the region. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he would also put additional troops on standby. He left open how many there would be.

Two aircraft carriers deployed in the region
The US has already sent two aircraft carriers and about 2,000 Marines to the region in recent weeks. Last week, Iraqi armed groups linked to Iran threatened to attack US bases. This applies in the event that the government in Washington intervenes in support of Israel against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
