In Anchorage, Alaska, a sled dog is running for mayor. His owner Robert Zeigler is convinced of the political qualities of “Meiko”, an Alaskan malamute (a sled dog breed, note).
“Meiko” is not on the ballot paper, but he can be registered as a so-called write-in candidate in an open field. In the United States, ballots with a pre-printed list of choices often include a “None of the List” option, which allows the voter to indicate a name not on the list. These registration candidates are, for example, explicitly provided for in many area codes.
Resident: “He has my vote!”
“He is very hairy and has great charisma,” says his owner Robert Zeigler. With his charm and good looks, “Meiko” is well received by many residents of the city, he says confidently. “He has my vote!”, a resident of the largest city in Alaska – the largest state in the US in terms of area – enthusiastically agrees.
Zeigler promotes his dog with the slogan “The choice is clear!” However, whether ‘Meiko’ actually has a chance at a political career will only become clear next year: the election of the mayor of Anchorage will take place in April 2024.
The dog breed is in the Yukon coat of arms
The Alaskan Malamute is a recognized dog breed from the United States and belongs to the sled dogs within the Nordic dog breeds. It is the official state dog of the American state of Alaska and also adorns the coat of arms of the Yukon, an area in the far northwest of Canada that borders Alaska to the west.
