Christmas is only a month away and preparations for the upcoming Christmas markets in Vienna are already in full swing. Of course, the traditional Christmas tree in front of the Vienna Town Hall should not be missed – this time from South Tyrol.
The proud 28 meter high and approximately 115 year old spruce was felled on Monday in the Rautal am Enneberg in the South Tyrolean Fanes-Sennes-Prags nature park. According to the correspondence from the City Hall, it will arrive in the federal capital next Friday and will be illuminated on November 10.
“Sign of our solidarity”
“A beautiful, full tree from our forests was chosen to brighten up the Christmas season for the residents of Vienna and guests from all over the world. This tree is also a sign of our connection with Vienna and Austria,” said South Tyrolean Governor Arno Kompatscher.
Traditional surface plastering
Will South Tyrol be able to convince this year? The Styrian spruce had caused quite a bit of mischief last year. The traditional cleaning will again be carried out by the city gardeners.
The last time a South Tyrolean tree stood on the Rathausplatz was in 2014. This year too, the spruce wood comes from sustainable forestry.
The preparations are in full swing
Since 1959, a different state has provided the Christmas tree every year, and South Tyrol since 1989. The Vienna Christmas tree is then opened with lights. The first construction work for the Christmas market is already taking place on Vienna’s Rathausplatz.
In addition to the Christmas tree and the market, there are also popular attractions such as the Herzerlbaum and the popular Vienna Ice Dream.
