80-year-old injured – Styrian woman buried under gravestone in cemetery!

Date:

The husband, who was also injured, and helpers lifted a heavy stone from the 80-year-old pensioner: “I had a guardian angel.”

When the K. couple went to a cemetery in Kapfenberg on Sunday after the service, Herta K. (80) experienced horrific moments of horror. “I was walking behind a grave on such a narrow path and didn’t even touch it – but when I got to the same height, the stone just fell over and fell on top of me!”

This was ‘terribly difficult’, ‘I could hardly breathe and I was so shocked that I didn’t even hear my husband scream for help.’ Two women rushed over and joined forces to lift the woman’s stone. Herta K.: “Despite everything, guardian angels stood by me – if the stone had fallen on my head, I might have been dead.” She suffered severe bruising and one of her husband’s legs was also injured.

The diocese confirms the incident and deeply regrets it. But spokesman Thomas Stanzer emphasizes: “We are only the property managers of our cemeteries. We are not even allowed to do the ‘shake test’ to see if headstones are sturdy, that would be a violation of private rights. The respective grave owners must guarantee safety.”
