While the Russian army is struggling with high casualties, the Kremlin is leaving no stone unturned: according to media reports, Moscow is now even recruiting women for the war.
The independent internet portal Istory wrote on Monday that female snipers and drone operators were recruited into the mercenary unit “Redut”, which is subordinate to the Russian Ministry of Defense. Until now, women in the Russian army were only employed as medics and in the kitchen.
The female soldiers are offered a six-month contract with a minimum monthly salary of approximately 2,200 euros. For comparison, the average Russian income is just over 700 euros per month. In the event of injury there is a bonus of 30,000 euros, in the event of death approximately 50,000 euros must be paid out to the surviving relatives. Corresponding advertisements appeared on the Russian social network “Wkontakte”. A female recruit said they were mainly looking for women who already had experience handling weapons. Beginners would be trained with the weapon within a month.
Heavy losses in the army
Russia has been waging a war of aggression against its neighbor for twenty months. Losses on both sides are considered high. According to the British Ministry of Defense, Russia has suffered around 150,000 deaths or serious injuries so far. There has been no official information about this from Moscow for months.
Due to the unexpectedly high number of losses in his army, Russian President Vladimir Putin officially announced the mobilization of 300,000 reservists last fall. Experts assume that, in view of the presidential elections scheduled for the spring of 2024, the Kremlin wants to avoid further mobilization until then and is therefore recruiting more and more volunteers.
