In eastern China’s Shandong Province, salt production has caused large parts of a salt lake near the city of Changyi to continually turn into colorful and ever-changing yellow, orange, blue, green, brown and ocher tiles. Small microorganisms are responsible for this.
In the drone footage (see video above), the landscape looks a bit like an oversized watercolor box. Certain types of algae are responsible for the differently colored water, which multiply in different parts depending on the salinity and depending on the temperature and thus color the water accordingly.
Pink microbes like to live in particularly salty water. The blue pools are less salty. There are other microbes here that make the water green. The natural spectacle attracts tourists to Shandong Province every year.
