After the collision of two cargo ships in the North Sea near Heligoland, there is still no trace of four members of the seven-man crew. There are still many unanswered questions surrounding the accident.
The search was stopped on Tuesday evening at 10:45 p.m., a spokesperson for the accident control announced on Wednesday evening. One can only speculate as to whether the missing persons can still be found. A decision must be made during the morning about how the search will continue.
It is still unclear why the roller coaster ‘Verity’ with seven sailors on board and the bulk carrier ‘Polesie’ with 22 people collided in the German Bight on Tuesday morning in the dark.
The accident took place about 22 kilometers southwest of the offshore island of Heligoland and 31 kilometers northeast of the East Frisian island of Langeoog – in one of the busiest sea areas in the world. The Verity’s signal was lost around 5:20 am on Tuesday.
20 hours of use
For more than twenty hours, rescue workers searched for the shipwrecked people with several ships, divers and helicopters – sometimes in strong winds, waves up to three meters high, currents and poor visibility. An airspace closure of 10 nautical miles around the site and 1,500 meters high was also implemented, the spokesperson said.
