Reforms announced – new government of France confirmed

Date:

French President Emmanuel Macron’s government team has been elected. There are not many changes. Some ministers are changing portfolios and the former ambassador to Britain is new to the team as foreign secretary.

Catherine Colonna was presented on Friday. Bruno Le Maire remains Minister of Finance, Gerald Darmanin remains Minister of the Interior. Industry Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher becomes Energy Minister. Sebastien Lecornu, formerly Minister of Overseas Territories, will receive the defense portfolio. The previous Minister of Labor Elisabeth Borne is the new Prime Minister. Together, they are intended to appeal to both left-wing and conservative voters.

Macron says the new government is planning relatively pro-European and business-friendly reforms. For example, the retirement age will be raised from 62 to 65, which is also criticized by the left. Instead, the newly formed left-wing alliance demands, among other things, a higher minimum wage and capped prices for essential goods. In addition, she wants to postpone EU rules without leaving the alliance.

Parliamentary elections yet to come
Its members will face Macron’s liberals and other parties in the general election on June 12. A second round is scheduled a week later. Should the population vote against Macron in these elections, a new head of government would have to be appointed. Emmanuel Macron was elected French president in April with 58.8 percent, while his rival Marine Le Pen received 41.5 percent of the vote.
