According to its own information, WESTbahn has fallen victim to a cyber attack. As the company announced on Wednesday, based on current knowledge it cannot be ruled out that ‘company, employee and customer data’ has also been leaked.
According to WESTbahn, the cyber incident took place last Thursday. A team of experts appointed by the company immediately took steps and stopped the attack. Since then, the IT department, with the help of external support, has “worked hard to investigate the incident to be even better protected against similar attacks in the future,” the report said.
WESTbahn did not provide any further information about the manner of the attack. However, the attackers gained access to the company’s systems and it cannot be ruled out that data was leaked. However, credit card details should not be affected. According to Westbahn, they would be processed by a third-party payment service provider.
WESTbahn urges more caution
The company warned that customer-related data could be misused as a result of the incident and that those affected could inadvertently become recipients of unwanted messages (e.g. spam, phishing). “We therefore ask for more caution in the coming weeks,” WESTbahn said.
Even if no passwords were stolen based on previous findings, the company recommended changing access data to “My WESTbahn” accounts “immediately”.
Hotline set up
Anyone who notices “unusual activity” related to their account or has questions about the cyber incident can contact the company by telephone on its dedicated hotline +43 1 361 0366 548.
