On Thursday morning, the animals at Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna were happy with the wonderful snowfall. This transformed the facility back into a wintry snowy landscape. The tracks of animals, especially polar bears, arctic wolves and vicunas, run through the snow cover.
“The joy is not only great among our visitors, many animal species can naturally cope well with the winter temperatures and are in their element with this weather,” zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck reported Thursday.
Siberian tigers love the snow
Our Siberian tigers and reindeer also enjoy the white splendor. The critically endangered Siberian tigers love to frolic in the snow. In their homeland of Russia and northern China, snow is available almost year-round, so the tigers have a thick layer of fat that keeps them warm even in freezing temperatures. The fur on the underside of their paws prevents them from slipping in snow and ice.
Smallest camels in the world
The vicunas are the smallest camels in the world and originate from the South American Andes at altitudes up to 5500 meters. Their fine, dense coat protects them from harsh weather and cold. Their wool was already used by the Incas to make clothing.
According to the zoo, other exotic animals such as elephants and pandas also enjoy the snow, but can retreat to warmer and heated animal enclosures at any time, the zoo reports.
