An elderly Georgia woman has sued restaurant chain Dunkin’ Donuts for burning herself with hot coffee – now the restaurant will pay her $3 million in damages. She suffered third-degree burns.
The woman, 70 years old, drove through the restaurant’s drive-thru in 2021. She spilled coffee and the hot liquid burned the skin of her thighs, groin and stomach. After the incident, she required extensive skin grafts.
As the plaintiff’s attorney explained, the cup’s lid was not properly closed by an employee, leading to the devastating accident. “Our client had to learn to walk again due to the severity of her burns,” the law firm said in a statement. She spent weeks in the burn unit of a local hospital. The medical bills are said to have totaled more than $200,000.
Woman still has pain while walking
“Walking still hurts her, she cannot go out in the sun and has to apply creams and ointments to her burns several times a day,” said the elderly lady’s lawyer.
Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee Golden Donuts, LLC ultimately agreed to a $3 million out-of-court settlement. “We hope this settlement sends a message to all restaurants and franchisees: it’s not complicated: train your employees properly and prioritize the safety of your customers,” the injured party’s attorney said.
