Israel’s military operation on Thursday evening was the largest ground attack in the Gaza Strip in the current conflict. Scores of tanks advanced and shelled military facilities as well as private homes of Hamas fighters. Similar actions are likely to follow. Krone+ has looked at which (special) weapons the Israelis use to enter the Gaza Strip.
Although Israel is reminiscent of Austria in size and population, the Middle Eastern state has one of the best militaries in the world. There are two reasons for this: on the one hand, approximately $23 billion flows into the military budget annually. That exceeds the total military spending of Egypt, Iran, Lebanon and Jordan combined.
Second, Israel is an ally of the United States. America not only helps financially (in 2022 this was 3.8 billion dollars), but also with weapons. Between 1950 and 2020, more than 80 percent of Israeli arms imports came from the United States. It is no big surprise that US President Joe Biden last week called for a comprehensive, $10 billion emergency funding request for Israel.
In the Israelis’ largest ground attack yet on the Gaza Strip since the Hamas attack on October 7, only a few weapons were displayed. Krone+ looked at how the Israeli Army (IDF) is equipped:
