A 64-year-old Austrian is missing and probably drowned in the sea off the Algarve in Portugal. A compatriot who tried to save him suffered a fatal heart attack.
The sandy beach Praia da Bordeira stretches almost endlessly along the coast – a lonely holiday paradise in the Algarve, which, however, became a death trap for two Austrians.
The two men went into the sea on Thursday evening. But it can be rough and unpredictable here – popular with surfers from all over the world. The high waves were probably fatal for the two Austrians. First, the 64-year-old retiree ran into trouble. He could no longer reach the shore. His friend immediately did everything humanly possible to save him.
drifted to sea
But in vain. The holidaymaker, who was a year older than him, was pushed even further into the sea. He must have drowned helplessly. Because even a search of a few hours was to no avail. And that despite the fact that shortly after that fire units from nearby Aljezur, as well as the maritime police and other special units with 19 emergency services searched for the missing person until far after dark.
Brave surfers pulled the victim ashore
Meanwhile, the other Austrian also fought for his life, but the shock and effort must have been too much for him. He could be pulled ashore by courageous eyewitnesses who had also raised the alarm. But despite all efforts to resuscitate him, he died of a heart attack in the sand.
In the meantime, the prosecutor’s office intervened. The body of the tourist who died in such a tragic way was taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Portimão, accompanied by a vehicle of the local maritime police.
