According to Ukrainian sources, a massacre took place in eastern Ukraine. At least 16 people have been killed in a Russian attack on the town of Kostjantynivka in the industrial region of Donetsk, Kiev sources said Wednesday.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s adviser Mychailo Podoliak reported on the incident in the afternoon but did not provide further details. The local media is talking about a rocket attack on the city with about 70,000 inhabitants near the war front.
More than 30 injured
Prime Minister Denys Schmyhal said a child was among the dead. Authorities say at least 30 other people were injured.
The number of victims could increase, Zelenskyj explained on Telegram. The attack hit “a normal market”. “Companies. A pharmacy. People who have done nothing wrong.”
The insolence of evil. The guts. sheer inhumanity”
And he addressed his words to the international community: “If anyone in the world is still trying to negotiate with any Russian, it means turning a blind eye to reality. The insolence of evil. The guts. Pure inhumanity. This Russian devil must be defeated as soon as possible.”
The head of state also released a short video showing the moment of the explosion in the busy district (see video above). He also showed photos of damaged facades of houses, pools of blood on the ground and rescuers extinguishing the flames. It was initially unclear what exactly the projectile hit. Some local media assumed an S-300 missile.
Repeatedly the target of Russian attacks
Kostyantynivka is located just under 20 kilometers southwest of the town of Bakhmut, which the Russians occupied a few months ago as part of their war of aggression, and has repeatedly been the target of Russian attacks. In July, Ukraine accused Russia of using a cluster bomb in Kostjantynivka that killed a child. Even before that, civilians were repeatedly killed by Russian attacks in the Ukrainian-controlled city.
