In Venice, the city council decided on Friday to activate the MOSE dam system to protect the lagoon city from a tidal wave. The 78 barriers on three of the lagoon’s waterways could remain in place for the next few days as heavy rain is expected, the report said.
The level reached about 140 centimeters above normal on Friday. MOSE’s flood protection gates are built into the sea at three entrances to the city harbour. The billion-dollar construction project was very controversial.
On the night of November 13, 2019, Venice was inundated by a catastrophic tidal wave. The water rose – driven by the sirocco wind – to 1.87 meters above sea level. This was the highest level since the devastating flood in 1966, when the height reached 1.94 meters.
Parts of the city of Muggia were flooded
Flooding also occurred in Muggia, a town on the coast of Trieste, which was inundated with 15 centimeters of water on Friday morning. The sea entered the entire port area and also flooded Piazza Marconi, the central square of the center, and Via Trieste, the city’s main thoroughfare.
What made matters worse was that there was occasional heavy rain. There were also floods in other Italian regions due to heavy rainfall, especially in Tuscany.
