A 67-year-old man in a wheelchair accidentally set his clothes on fire while smoking in a nursing home in Vienna-Liesing. The pensioner suffered serious burns and was flown to hospital in critical condition, according to the Vienna Professional Rescue Service. There was no danger to other residents. 16 firefighters were still checking the location.
Home staff extinguished the fire
According to an online report in the daily newspaper ‘Heute’, the man is said to have worn a nasal cannula, as is necessary for oxygen supply, and still lit the cigarette.
The medical and nursing staff in the house had already extinguished the fire. The rescue team took over emergency medical care and stabilized the patient so he could be flown by rescue helicopter to an emergency clinic, spokesman Daniel Melcher said.
