Cold days – winter greetings: snow all the way to the Danube!

Date:

The still young month of April shows us the cold shoulder and brings winter back to us at the weekend. Up to 30 centimeters of fresh snow congregate in the mountains – even in the eastern lowlands it will start snowing on Saturday.

Early in the morning you should be prepared for snowfall on the northern side of the Alps on Saturday, but winter greetings will also reach the east during the afternoon. “On the mountains there will be 15 to 30 centimeters of fresh snow and about 5 centimeters of wet snow can also be expected in the larger valleys and in the Danube region,” predicts Manfred Spatzierer, chief meteorologist at the Severe Weather Center.

Be careful on the street!
In many parts of the country you have to take winter road conditions into account – so be careful on the roads and drive according to the conditions. Temperatures do not go above minus 2 to plus 6 degrees.

Frost damage possible
The good news: The weather will start to improve on Sunday and the snowfall will slowly decrease. However, it remains frosty – also at the start of the new week. This mainly starts “in the north with moderate frosts around minus 5 degrees,” said Spatzierer, who warned of possible frost damage to the apricots still in bloom. But the frost is not a regular guest – temperatures will rise again from Tuesday.

March of Records
As the March review by the Severe Weather Center shows, the month was marked by sunshine and cloudless skies, as well as massive drought. “In some places on the north side of the Alps, March was even sunnier than an average June,” Spatzierer analyzes. Regionally, new solar records were set, such as in the provincial capitals of Bregenz, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Linz and St. Pölten.

“Especially in the Tyrolean capital, the month was extraordinary in all respects, so there was also the longest period in spring without precipitation and also the driest March since the measurements started,” says the expert. Overall, this March ranks fourth among the driest since the beginning of measurement history.
