A shipwreck occurred off the coast of Tunisia. According to the authorities of the African country, the bodies of 27 migrants who had tried to reach the Italian coast were found not far from the Kerkennah Islands.
According to the regional director of civil protection in the port and industrial city of Sfax, 83 people were rescued. He pointed out that five of those rescued had been taken to Slim Hadri Regional Hospital.
National Guard and Civil Protection as rescuers
The rescue operation by Tunisian National Guard and Civil Protection units took place three nautical miles (about 5.5 kilometers) off the Kerkennah Islands.
A total of 110 migrants were on board two boats, one of which capsized and the other sank.
