A 67-year-old nursing home resident accidentally set his clothes on fire while smoking in Vienna on Friday. The wheelchair user died from his serious injuries.
According to reports, the man, who was staying in a nursing home in Vienna-Liesing, was wearing a nasal cannula, which is necessary for oxygen supply. Nevertheless, the man lit a cigarette.
Personnel extinguished the fire
When the home staff noticed the fire, the fire was immediately extinguished with a fire extinguisher. The rescue team took over emergency medical care and stabilized the patient so he could be flown by rescue helicopter to an emergency clinic, spokesman Daniel Melcher said. However, the man died there from his serious injuries.
Fire experts from the Vienna State Criminal Investigation Department are responsible for further investigation and definitive clarification of the cause of the fire. However, there are currently no indications of third-party negligence. There was no danger to other residents.
