Fatal incident in a mine in August
In August, a fatal accident occurred at a mine owned by the international steel company, killing five workers. A government-appointed committee blamed the company for the accident.
The company could be nationalized
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has ordered his government to end its investment partnership with Arcelormittal following the recent incident. There are also plans to nationalize the country’s largest steel mills. The President expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
In November 2021, a serious accident also occurred in a coal mine not far from Karaganda, which also belongs to Arcelormittal. At that time, several workers were killed in a methane gas explosion. Several fatal accidents had already occurred at the mine in the city of Abai.
