Date:

After the terrorist attack on an events center in Moscow, investigators have seized weapons and ammunition. The victims of the attack had all been removed from the building by Saturday morning. The background is unclear, although the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack. The perpetrators were searched at night.

A short video released early Saturday morning by Russia’s State Investigative Committee showed weapons and ammunition being recovered from the building.

On display were a Kalashnikov submachine gun and reams of magazines. The investigators collected bags full of spent cartridge casings.

As “Bild” reported, Russian rock band Picnic had been on stage on Friday evening in preparation for their show at Crocus City Hall – but that didn’t happen.

Shortly before the concert started, the attackers opened fire. On video footage, shots were heard and people were seen fleeing. Automatic weapons and explosives were used. As a result, blazing flames and a huge cloud of smoke could be seen on the famous building. The roof collapsed.

By Saturday morning, the victims of the attack had all been removed from the building. The more than sixty dead are said to be both employees and visitors of the concert hall.

IS: “Large gathering attacked”
The jihadist militia IS has claimed responsibility for the attack. The group wrote on Telegram that IS fighters had attacked “a large gathering… on the outskirts of the Russian capital Moscow.”

Firefighters battled a blaze for hours in the enormous building, which covered almost 13,000 square meters. After it was initially said that the fire was under control, an open fire broke out again in the morning.

They came from inside and were clearly visible on the roof. The fire brigade extinguished the fire with water from outside. Firefighting helicopters initially in use were withdrawn.

“Terrorist attack”

Interfax quoted the agency as saying that “all necessary measures” would be taken. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin addressed the public in a statement published by Russian state media. There is talk of “a terrible tragedy”.
