Scaffolding on a large construction site on Hamburg’s Chicagostrasse collapsed on Monday morning. As a result, several workers were buried; five were killed, as the fire brigade confirmed.
The victims fell from scaffolding, a fire brigade spokesperson said. About 60 rescue workers from the fire brigade are on site on a large scale. The fire brigade is currently treating the injured and searching for further victims. The area with approximately 700 employees is evacuated.
According to initial information, scaffolding in a multi-storey elevator shaft has collapsed. Several works were buried under the scaffolding.
The Überseequartier is one of the largest construction sites in Hamburg. A shopping arcade, restaurants, offices and hotels will be built there.
