A broken stone, barely bigger than a fist, from a height of several meters – that’s enough to cause serious injury. During a climbing trip in Hinterstoder (Upper Austria), such a boulder hit an athlete straight in the face.
A 26-year-old climber suffered serious head and facial injuries on Sunday afternoon in Hinterstoder, where he was on open terrain with a mountain friend. While rappelling, the rope released a boulder from the wall and it fell straight into the unprotected face of the alpinist, who was well rested and also wearing a helmet.
His mountain companion was able to abseil him to a safe place and call the emergency number. Before the mountain rescue team had to ascend, the emergency helicopter arrived and picked up the seriously injured person using the rescue rope. The 26-year-old was flown to the trauma room of the Linz University Hospital.
Use on Schoberstein
There was also a rescue operation at Schoberstein on sunny Sunday. Here an alpinist suffered a shoulder injury and was rescued with the help of mountain rescue and the Red Cross.
