Legend has it that alligators live in the sewers of New York – at least one now stands as a statue. The work of Swedish artist Alexander Klingspor depicts an alligator on the back of a manhole cover.
The statue was recently installed in Union Square in the middle of Manhattan. According to neighborhood organization Union Square Partnership, which is behind the campaign, the statue will be on display until June 2024.
Legend has it that some people in New York dumped baby alligators, brought to the city as pets from southern states like Florida and Louisiana, into the sewers. There they grew very large and even multiplied.
Popular as a horror story
No one has ever provided any evidence for this so-called urban legend, but it is often told as a scary story in New York, especially at Halloween.
