Seven years later: violent demonstration on the Brenner Pass: leader traced

Date:

Seven years after the violent riots of 600 chaotic people on the historic border, the escape of a well-known anarchist has now come to an end (37). He was convicted, but then went into hiding under an assumed name.

The chilling images caused horror far beyond Tyrol: On May 7, 2016, around 600 left-wing extremists, some of them violent, fought a battle with police on the Brenner Pass. Stone throwing, tear gas, smoke bombs and chase scenes deep into the woods characterize the memorable day. Motto of the unannounced demonstration: away with Austrian border controls!

13 arrests and 17 injured police officers
Ultimately, the Carabinieri arrest thirteen perpetrators, including two Austrians. 17 Italian police officers are injured, two of them seriously. The next day, then LH Günther Platter announced: “I am shocked by the scale of the violence.”

The result is that the legal process is slow, but the Bolzano Public Prosecutor’s Office does its job and meticulously assesses the image and video material. A total of 166 years, one month and five days in prison will be imposed in a trial against 63 suspects in May 2021.

Known under the pseudonym “Stecco”
Well-known anarchist and Brenner leader Luca D was also convicted, but the 37-year-old from Trieste escaped justice by fleeing. He was known for publishing numerous anarchist writings and was considered one of the leading figures of the Trentino scene – under the pseudonym “Stecco”.

The Italian special unit NOCS has now succeeded in arresting the man, who has been on the run for two years. He went into hiding in Bordighera in the province of Impera. This was preceded by complex research; Luca D. had a false ID. According to Italian media, prison sentences of three years and six months are still outstanding.

Brenner arms himself with video surveillance
The border stone was defaced, the Italian flag was stolen – the city of Brenner with its historic border has also been struggling with politically disruptive maneuvers lately, although they are rarely as bad as in 2016. The municipality has now decided to install surveillance cameras in critical places places.
