A senior pediatrician in the Gaza Strip has now warned that hospitals will soon become ‘cemeteries’. Some operations would have to be performed without anesthesia and with cell phone light, and his hospital would also run out of painkillers and antibiotics.
Doctors would resort to primitive means to care for patients. “To clean the wounds of injured children, I had to use chlorine mixed with water,” said Hussam Abu Safija, a senior pediatrician at Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip.
According to aid organization CARE, pregnant women are increasingly having to undergo a caesarean section without anesthesia. Resources are not available and hospitals are “completely overloaded”. The lack of medical care significantly increases the risk of maternal and infant mortality. “Due to dwindling food supplies, there is a significant overall risk to the health of the 283,000 children under the age of five in Gaza, as well as pregnant and lactating women,” said Hiba Tibi, Country Director of CARE Palestine (West Bank and Gaza ). .
According to UN representatives, there is also hardly any clean water and medicine available. “We are doing our best, but we need better medical care, otherwise our hospitals will become cemeteries,” Safija warned.
Relief supplies for the civilian population have arrived again
Meanwhile, another 55 trucks carrying urgently needed aid have arrived in the Gaza Strip. They brought water, food and medicine across the border from Egypt. According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, an aid group, a fuel delivery has not yet been approved. This is necessary, among other things, to operate life-saving devices. The Israeli government fears that Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, could use the fuel for military purposes.
United Arab Emirates wants to treat children
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, 16 out of a total of 35 hospitals can no longer treat patients due to a lack of fuel. They would need the fuel for their generators to produce electricity.
Both the Egyptian and United Arab Emirates governments have already announced their intention to treat injured people from the Gaza Strip (see video above). Emirati President Mohammed bin Sajid has ordered the treatment of a thousand Palestinian children from Gaza, accompanied by their families, state news agency WAM reported on Wednesday evening.
