The heavy rain kept the fire brigade in Carinthia busy overnight. In Kötschach-Mauthen it rained about 90 liters per square meter in the evenings, and in Dellach an der Drau a lot of rain also fell from the sky. Most of the operations were due to flooded basements and streets, but given the preparations, they were well prepared.
On Thursday people had already prepared for the coming storms; the civil protection association of the southernmost state, together with the crisis team, had called on citizens to take their own responsibility: “Take the weather warnings for your areas seriously! Don’t endanger yourself unnecessarily during floods and storms. Human life always comes before the protection of property and property.”
1,600 households without electricity
In the afternoon, heavy gusts of wind had already led to some emergency operations and numerous fallen trees had to be removed. Wind gusts of around 90 km/h were measured in Ferlach. At Dobratsch there were wind gusts of 126 km/h, ORF reports. About 1,600 households were without power.
Heavy rain that started in the evening made the situation worse and emergency services had to be deployed again due to flooded streets and cellars. However, given the preparations, no major mudslides or blockages occurred, reports the Kötschach-Mauthen fire brigade.
Numerous roads closed
Many roads are still closed due to the storms, such as the Wurzenpass and Loiblpass Straße. Katschbergstraat also had to be closed due to flooding.
