While it will rain in the valley, as announced, winter will only really make itself felt on Friday in the higher areas of Tyrol and on many mountain routes. On the Brenner Pass, for example, there was heavy snow in the morning. Snow chains were mandatory on various connections. In East Tyrol there was rockfall and a mudslide as a result of the rain.
On Tuesday night, a mudslide hit the A13, the Brenner highway, just before the border with Italy due to heavy rain. A car with two occupants was hit by debris; fortunately the two South Tyroleans were unharmed. Since then, traffic in this area has been one lane in each direction. The direction of Innsbruck will remain closed for the time being.
There was no great chaos
On Friday morning, the Brenner Pass looked very different: thick snow, snow-clearing vehicles, everything around was white. Winter is making a comeback. As a result, in addition to the single-lane traffic control due to mudslides and the end of the autumn holidays, there were some disruptions. But the big chaos didn’t happen.
Snow chains are sometimes required
According to the ÖAMTC, due to the winter conditions, snow chains were also mandatory on higher roads, for example (from 8:45 a.m.) on the Hahntennjoch, which connects the districts of Imst and Reutte, or on the Felbertauernstrasse between East Tyrol and Salzburgerland. Snow chains were mandatory for trucks on Pass Thurn.
Rock chips and mudslides in East Tyrol
The announced heavy rainfall was palpable in East Tyrol. For example, on Thursday evening a stone wall near the national highway in Prägraten had softened so much that stones fell onto the road. “That was an area of about 30 meters. It was too dangerous for the cars. That is why we cordoned off the area, secured it with concrete barriers and lowered the remaining stones,” said fire chief Fabian Mair. The road is now freely accessible again. Another patrol will take place in this area on Friday.
However, a mudslide on Friday morning in the municipality of Assling had greater consequences. “A side stream that flows into the Markbach broke out and brought in a lot of material,” says fire chief Manuel Oberwasserlechner. The area on Pustertaler Höhenstrasse has been cordoned off and is now being inspected by the building’s district office. No one was injured. The Pustertaler Höhenstraße is closed between Schrottendorf and Bannberg until further notice.
