Eviction threatens – future for mobile pig farming uncertain

Date:

Brothers Andreas and Thomas Hubmann from Gerersdorf in the St. Pölten district rely on regenerative agriculture and run a mobile, free-range pig farm. But now the approximately 400 animals are threatened with deportation.

They are one of the first companies in all of Austria to keep their pigs in mobile stables in the fresh air. But now the approximately 400 pigs are threatened with deportation. There would be concerns among the district administration that nitrogen could end up in the groundwater, explains Andreas Hubmann.

Due to the current legal situation, the Hubmann family’s pig farm cannot be carried out, according to the BH: “The project goes against the protection of groundwater required by water legislation. This legal opinion of the St. Pölten district administration, which is based on reports from an official expert in the field of hydraulic engineering, was also confirmed several times by the Regional Administrative Court of Lower Austria. Pig farm operators must therefore comply with the decisions of the administrative court.”

Private report
But the farmers don’t want to give up. A private report would show that there is no risk of negative consequences for the environment as a result of mobile pig farming. Andreas Hubmann tried for more than two years to get an appointment at the district headquarters – this week the time finally came. However, no solution was reached. What will happen next to livestock farming remains an open question.
