‘Britain’s loneliest sheep’ rescued

Date:

A sheep that had been living alone on a cliff for years has been freed from its isolation, according to British media reports. The BBC, among others, reported on this this weekend.

Accordingly, the animal, known as ‘Britain’s loneliest sheep’, was lost on a cliff along the Cromarty Firth inlet in the Scottish Highlands. A kayaker first saw it there in 2021 and saw it again two years later.

Sheep rescued from cliff
A petition was recently launched to save the animal, which attracted more than 55,000 signatures. It has now been saved by a sheep shearer called Cammy Wilson, who presents a BBC program about farming and rural life.

He gathered a group of volunteers who pushed the animal up the mountain – and sometimes lifted it, he reported in videos published on social media.

He said he wanted to show that farmers care about the fate of their animals after many negative comments appeared on social media.

Thin line between ‘heroism and idiotism’
The reason why the animal, now called ‘Fiona’, was not rescued sooner was that there was no insurance cover in the event of an accident.

He admitted that the action was not without danger. “A mistake is the only difference between heroism and idiotism,” he said. Fortunately that didn’t happen.

Sheep in good condition
Scottish animal welfare charity Scottish SPCA confirmed the rescue operation via text message service X (formerly Twitter) and said the animal was in good condition.

How ‘Fiona’ reached the remote cliffs remained unclear. Apparently she was not short of food: “Fiona” was overweight and had a very long coat, Wilson reported. She will now have a very special home.
