“Rare event” – The Northern Lights shone so beautifully in Austria

Date:

As reported, there was an impressive light show in the night sky in Austria on Sunday evening. Numerous images captured the “extremely rare event” for those who could not see it with their own eyes.

The reason for the optical phenomenon was a strong geomagnetic storm caused by the currently increased solar activity, “according to the current status the third strongest event in the current solar cycle,” said the head of Geosphere Austria’s space weather office, Christian. Mostl.

Beautiful in pink
Between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM the sky turned pink and red, to the delight of many Austrians who were able to experience the light up close and capture it with impressive photos.

For example, in St. Pölten (Lower Austria), the sky shone with red light, creating a rare spectacle. The sky was also bright red above Lake Wörthersee, so that the lake also shone pink due to the reflection.

Northern lights over Salzburg
You can also enjoy a rare sight of the Northern Lights over the mountains of Salzburg. A similar natural spectacle took place in the state in September.

According to Möstl, the geomagnetic storm reached a strength of G3 on the intended five-part scale. Solar activity – and therefore the chance of solar storms – is related to the frequency of sunspots.

According to data from the US atmospheric agency NOAA, their numbers are currently higher than they have been in more than two decades. It is expected that “increased solar activity will reach its maximum in 2024 or 2025,” Möstl said.

Not for the last time
Normally the Northern Lights or Northern Lights can only be admired in the far north such as Norway and Finland. However, according to experts, they could also be seen more often in Austria in the future.
