Former US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that with him in the White House there would be no war in Ukraine or that it would end within a day. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has serious doubts about this. Now the Ukrainian head of state has invited Trump, who is campaigning for the elections, to “explain to him within 24 minutes” why that is not possible.
“He is very welcome. President Joe Biden was here and understood some of the details. “Only if you live here can you understand everything,” Zelenskyj said in an interview with American broadcaster NBC. “He cannot create peace – because of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin!” At the same time, the Ukrainian explained that the Kremlin leader would not be willing to make peace without giving up the occupied territories or his country’s independence.
Visits from other Republican candidates
When asked if he had ever spoken to the 77-year-old since Trump left the White House, Zelensky said no. “That is exactly why he is very welcome to continue the tradition,” the head of state added. Other Republican presidential candidates have already been to Kiev, including former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Trump’s Vice President Mike Pence. The latter recently gave up his candidacy.
Moreover, the invitation to Trump comes at a time when, according to current polls in the traditionally disputed American states, the entrepreneur, who is currently fighting the judiciary in various criminal cases, has a lead in the election polls over the incumbent Biden. There is still a lot of time until November 2024, when the next US president will be elected, but the leadership in Kiev already seems concerned about declining support – especially from Republicans.
