Police respond – Graz Derby: How could the situation escalate so much?

Date:

Many people are asking themselves this question right now. The “Krown” spoke to police about possible factors. And: While Sturm president Christian Jauk remains silent, GAK manager Matthias Dielacher is now speaking out critically.

Fans storming the stadium, attacking and injuring defenseless people with iron bars, throwing objects around, attacking police officers with pepper spray: dramatic incidents that took place on All Souls’ Day in Graz during the cup derby. But how could it get to this point?

From the police point of view, this is an extremely difficult issue. There are several problem areas. Above all, there is a hardcore core of about 40 Sturm fans who no longer seem to shy away from anything. That is why the police and the clubs must work closely together, “because no one can guarantee safety alone,” says police spokesman Markus Lamb.

In principle, the police are well positioned. In games like these, different squads are deployed with different tasks, as Willibald Gutschi, head of the Operations Department at the City Police Command, explains. For example, our own research team that accepts reports. The organizer must ensure safety in the stadium; at this match the stewards seemed overwhelmed and literally overrun. Meanwhile, the executive force was busy outside with the influx at the fan miles and the fan march, but immediately intervened when the riots broke out in the stadium. Moreover: “The outdated stadium is a challenge for the security apparatus,” says police spokesman Markus Lamb. To ensure greater safety, adjustments are necessary, which should start at the entrance at the turnstiles.

GAK also sees that Sturm and the police are guilty
Why don’t the police take tougher action against noisy fans? The answer is that we act in accordance with the Security Police Act. De-escalation is the highest priority.

GAK criticizes the storm and the police
On Monday, GAK manager Matthias Dielacher took the floor (you can read the full statement at the end of the article): “The security concept was similar to that of last year. We were not happy with the situation at the time, but were strongly pressured by Sturm, the director and the ÖFB to give the north stand to the Sturm fans. A total of 190 stewards were deployed. Possible shortcomings in the access situation are currently being evaluated with the security service, but in no way justify the robbery of our fan shop.” The GAK looked critically at the situation in front of the stadium and Sturm and the police wrongly assessed it as not dangerous. .

Sturm president Christian Jauk remains silent. A meeting will take place on Monday between club management and fan representatives.
