A pedestrian was hit by a tram in Innsbruck on Monday afternoon. The woman suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.
According to police, the accident took place on Kranebitter Allee in the west of the Tyrolean capital. The 69-year-old wanted to cross the street behind a tram outside the protective path when she was hit by another tram traveling in the opposite lane and fell.
Emergency braking failed
The 38-year-old tram driver immediately applied emergency braking, but was unable to prevent a collision. The woman suffered serious head injuries in the fall, said police spokesman Christian Viehweider. She received emergency medical care and was then taken to hospital by ambulance.
