During a ‘counter-demo’ for the Pride parade in June, a 49-year-old defaced the Burgtor in Vienna. According to the Public Prosecution Service, this involves serious damage to a monument. During the trial on Monday, the suspect was surprised when she suddenly took a large stone out of her pink plastic bag…
The defendant’s companions, who continuously disrupted the proceedings on the first day of the trial in October, did not come to the Wiener Landl on the day of the verdict. The 49-year-old had brought something else with her that caused astonishment: in the middle of the process, Mrs. M. took a 30 cm long stone (!) out of her plastic bag – to show what kind of pen she used on June 17 Vienna Pride – so to speak as a counter-demonstrator – several pillars of the monumental castle gate in the center of Vienna. At the time, the graffiti read: “Pride before the fall,” which she wants translated as “pride comes before the fall.”
“Didn’t know it was a monument”
“It was just chalk and I didn’t know it was a monument,” the veteran protester told judge Philipp Schnabel. The next day she came back with water and a sponge, but she was not allowed to clean.
Verdict: fine plus cleaning costs
‘It’s limestone. “Sandblasting is the gentlest method,” the representative of the castle authorities hands over an invoice. The Viennese woman, who studied art and has several convictions, must now pay the cleaning costs of 505 euros plus a fine of 720 euros. She took the stone back with her after the verdict was announced.
