“Would be a declaration of war” – Gaza Strip: Jordan draws “red line”

Date:

“It is our duty to help the brothers and sisters who were injured in the war against Gaza. We will always be there for our Palestinian brothers and sisters,” Jordan’s King Abduallah II said recently. Now its prime minister has drawn a “red line”: the kingdom considers attempts to expel Palestinians from the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, or the conditions for preparing for it, as a ‘declaration of war’.

The “brutal attacks on ambulances and humanitarian workers” in the Gaza Strip contradict “the principle of self-defense.” According to Aktuell al-Khasawneh, all options are on the table. A spokesperson for Israel’s Foreign Ministry said Israel’s relations with Jordan are of strategic importance to both countries. “We deplore the inflammatory statements made by the Jordanian leadership.” Israel’s goal is to destroy Hamas’s terrorist infrastructure. “Israel has no intention of harming or deporting the civilian population.”

“Arab summit” this weekend
After the foreign ministers of several Arab states and a representative of the PLO discussed the current situation in Gaza last weekend, another “Arab summit” will take place this Saturday. According to the Jordanian Prime Minister, the meeting will take place in Saudi Arabia. Jordan had already decided to recall its ambassador to Israel in response to the Gaza war. At the same time, the Israeli ambassador, who had previously left the kingdom, was not allowed to return to Amman.

Refugees are not accepted
However, the support from the neighboring country is not enough to make them willing to take in refugees. There are several reasons for this negative attitude, but it also has to do with the concern that it could ultimately lead to permanent deportation. They also want to avoid an increased risk of terrorism as a result of the infiltration of radical Palestinians.

There are also historical concerns. For example, in 1970, radicalized Palestinians committed an assassination attempt on the then Jordanian King Hussein I. Their Israel policy was too liberal for them.
