A woman from Pongau (25) poisoned her ex-boyfriend’s four-legged friend. During the trial, she admits to animal abuse and explains that it is her fault – without a word of remorse. The judge imposes a fine.
He would have been five years old in October, the suspect’s ex-boyfriend told the Crown in the justice building in Salzburg. What is meant is “Balu”, a Labrador Retriever. Just over a month ago, on September 7, the four-legged friend died. Because the suspect (25) poisoned him: ham snacks laced with rat poison.
The suspect speaks of financial problems
The 25-year-old in debt answered judge Anna Sophia Geisselhofer’s question why with one word: “short-circuit reaction.” When the judge and prosecutor investigated further, the defendant explained that she was having financial problems: “It was because of the debt. It’s all too much for me.” This surprises the judge again: “And then they spend money on poison?” The lawyer went on to say that the crime was related to a “relationship drama.” But that is exactly not what the ex sees, as he explains on the witness stand: “No, it actually worked well.” Both had wanted the dog. After the divorce he stayed with the woman, but the man was allowed to see him. On September 2 he took him to the vet: ‘There was already a suspicion of poisoning.’ On September 7, the 25-year-old called him and reported the dog’s death: “When I came, he was in the basement. He was cold, all wet and already stiff.”
There he also found the boxes with the poison. And the ex said something else: “The dog actually got in her way because she wanted to move in with her boyfriend in Styria. And she could not have taken Balu with her.” Before the verdict was pronounced, the victim’s lawyer emphasized: “This was by no means a quick reaction, but an act that had been planned for a long time.”
The judge also acknowledged multiple attempts to poison the Labrador. The 25-year-old was fined 3,240 euros – not legally binding.
