Vienna’s Leopoldstadt Temple, once destroyed by the National Socialists, was illuminated Tuesday evening to commemorate the November pogroms. The light installation can be seen at Tempelgasse 5 until November 9 and is part of the #WeRemember campaign of the World Jewish Congress (WJC).
The campaign, which is taking place in collaboration with the Israeli Religious Society and under the patronage of National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) in Austria, aims to “use modern forms of memory culture to provide a real understanding of the diverse Jewish life in Germany and Austria, which was wiped out by the National Socialists.”
At the opening of the installation, the President of the Israeli Community, Oskar Deutsch, recalled the sharp increase in the number of attacks on Jews, including in Austria, since the attack on Israel by the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas, as well as the increase in anti -Israeli attacks on Jews. Semitic slogans. These are still isolated cases, but the question is for how long.
The highlight of the commemoration ceremonies is the “Light of Hope” event on November 9 at 7 p.m. on Heldenplatz. At the memorial march and rally on Ballhausplatz, organized by the Jewish youth of Vienna, everyone is invited to “send a strong and visible signal for solidarity and against all anti-Semitism.”
