Locked in dungeons – Kremlin fighters: “Punished for surviving”

Date:

Anyone who doesn’t die clearly didn’t fight hard enough: that seems to be the motto of Russian commanders towards forced conscripts in Ukraine. A military blogger reports that surviving soldiers were severely punished when they returned to base. Wounded recruits were locked in a dungeon to die.

To replenish its armed forces, the Russian military has been recruiting recruits in prisons who are eligible for pardons after their military service. But the military leadership should not expect that many of them will ever return home, as US military blogger Chris Owen reports on X.

“Russian commanders apparently assume that only two percent of soldiers with convictions survive the attacks,” he explained in a post. “Surviving soldiers are punished because they assume their survival is proof that they disobeyed their orders.”

The message from the military blogger on X:

Injured back at base: “Mission not accomplished”
Two of these forced conscripts who deserted told of a terrible incident in July. 15 men from their unit survived an attack and returned to their base. A commander nicknamed Caspian subsequently stated that they “failed to complete the mission and that the survival rate of the convicts should not exceed two percent.

Locked in dungeons with little food and little drink
The wounded soldiers received no medical attention, but were thrown into a kind of dungeon. There they received neither food nor sufficient water. “Three of the wounded died immediately in the basement. And he immediately sent the remaining twelve people, some wounded, some unharmed, to attack, without weapons, without equipment, without anything,” the deserters say.

“Human lives are not valuable”
The rest of the men eventually died there. “In short, they kill their own men when something goes wrong… In short, human lives are not valuable,” the fugitives said. Moreover, the dead would be classified as deserters and not missing – apparently so that their relatives would not receive any compensation.
