In the center of Villach, the police wanted to arrest a moped driver on Monday, but instead of stopping he accelerated and chased the officers.
When the moped rider noticed around 3 p.m. on Monday that the police officers were trying to stop him, he accelerated and drove away. But he didn’t get far because he had to stop at a closed rail barrier. The young man then tried to escape on foot across an adjacent meadow, but was caught by police.
An inspection of the vehicle revealed that both the moped and the license plate mounted on it had been reported as stolen. “The driver, a 20-year-old from Villach, stated that he had bought the moped in Villach-Lind from a man he did not know for 150 euros. “He found the stolen license plates on the ground in front of the train station,” police said.
The 20-year-old is reported. The moped is returned to the rightful owner. Further investigation into the previously unknown seller is ongoing.
