A hair-raising ride on a tractor, drunk, stoned and with his mother on a makeshift chair, ended in an accident in Tyrol in August. Now the driver had to answer to the Innsbruck Regional Court.
Without a tractor license, a 39-year-old from the Innsbruck area left in August with an unregistered tractor with bad tires. “Before that I drank beer and smoked a joint,” he admitted when asked several times during the trial.
“I thought it would be okay”
The passenger seat his mother was sitting in was improvised and “homemade,” the defendant admitted. Yet he didn’t feel guilty for a long time: ‘I was driving on the same dirt road I always drive on.’ To the end, even though it started to rain, he believed “that everything would be all right.”
Mother and son seriously injured
But the tractor fell over steep terrain and his mother suffered a fractured femoral neck and traumatic brain injury, among other injuries. The driver suffered a ruptured lung.
For the action, which according to the verdict was “gross negligence”, an unconditional fine of 2,880 euros and a six-month suspended prison sentence – legally binding – were imposed.
