With a farewell concert in the Vienna Konzerthaus on November 19, star pianist and conductor Philippe Entremont says goodbye to a city that served as his home for more than a decade and a half as chief conductor of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. Fans of classical music now have the chance to win tickets to the classical legend’s farewell concert with KronePLUS.
At the age of 89, Philippe Entremont has achieved everything the music world has to offer, from Carnegie Hall to teaching at the Schola Cantorum in Paris. Philippe Entremont says goodbye to his fans in Vienna with Haydn’s last symphony in D major. And Mozart’s piano concerto in a minor key is no coincidence either. The Concerto K 466, written in 1785, was composed in D minor, a key that for Mozart symbolized darkness, tragedy and doom and which is also dominant in Don Giovanni.
Incredible world career
Philippe Entremont made his official debut in Barcelona in 1951 (including the premiere of Jolivet’s Piano Concerto) and soon toured several European countries. On January 5, 1953, he made his American debut with the National Orchestral Association, on this occasion under the baton of Léon Barzin. In the 1950s and 1960s, Entremont performed in almost all the major classical music halls in the world.
At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, he participated as one of ten internationally renowned players in the so-called “Piano Extravaganza of the Century”. In addition to his role as chief conductor of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, he also took over as music director of the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra between 1981 and 1986. In 2007, he returned to New Orleans as a pianist to open the orchestra’s second season after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. He also set the tempo for the Denver Symphony Orchestra (Colorado), the Orchester des Concerts Colonnes in Paris, the Israel Chamber Orchestra and the Munich Symphony Orchestra.
