The Styrian printed circuit board manufacturer AT&S from Leoben will produce for the American chip manufacturer AMD next year in its new factory in Malaysia. Production of IC substrates for AMD will begin in Malaysia in the fourth quarter of 2024, an AT&S spokesperson told Reuters on Tuesday. AT&S is investing approximately 1.7 billion euros in the new factory in Malaysia.
Half of the on-site capacity will be made available to AMD, the spokesperson said. However, the Styrian company is not allowed to provide information about the number of units.
Connection between printed circuit board and chip
In addition to printed circuit boards for smartphones, tablets, game consoles and medical devices, AT&S also produces so-called IC substrates, which are used in notebooks and serve as connecting elements between the printed circuit board and the chip.
Normally the company is not allowed to reveal the names of customers. But it is an open secret that Apple and Intel are also involved.
